Intents are used by an application to interact with the phone’s hardware components or other applications, or to start a service or activity with a certain piece of data or to broadcast that an event has occurred.Using Intents to launch phone activities: We can use Intents to launch the phone’s basic activities such as the phone dialer, the browser or search. According to google “an Intent object, is a passive data structure holding an abstract description of an operation to be performed”. intent is a very powerful concept. I have seen following advantages of intents. It loosely couples your application. It can activate three core components of the android applications activities, services, and broadcast receivers. Using intents you can start any other activity that is installed in the system. e.g. you can start address book application and... (more)

Four different ways of opening a web page in Android

FIRST POST OF 2009!! Threw this Android Activity together really quickly to see if I understood the different ways of getting a web page to launch.  The first three examples perform the same functionality, the Linkify.addLink call builds a means of launching an Intent.ACTION_VIEW.  The fourth example loads the url into a WebView in the layout. Just as a note, it seems that the API is pretty sensitive to using “www.mgmblog.com” vs “http://www.mgmblog.com”, I think I’ve got it correct where it matters, y... (more)

Android tutorial – embedded HTML file in WebView

Working on Power Schedule, I wanted to make a short help file, with some formatting. It seems there were several ways of doing this, but I chose to include an embedded HTML file into my application. It seemed easier to just edit an HTML file in an editor. So let’s get started…first, embed an html file in the app resources. For this, create the “raw” subfolder in “res” folder and add your HTML formatted file: use a WebView view in your layout file: use this code in your activity onCreate() method:... (more)

Fixed header in a TableLayout

As the previous post this will also cover TableLayout. As with borders, there are no attribute for defining a TableRow as a header row. With header row I mean a row that will not scroll with the rest of the data in the TableLayout (providing you have declared the table to be inside a ScrollView). Well, there is actually a way to work around this using a separate TableLayout for the header row. If you know that the header columns will be wider than the rest of the data in the table it's pretty easy. S... (more)

You can have multiple elements within a FrameLayout but each element will be positioned based on the top left of the screen. Elements that overlap will be displayed overlapping.
